SHANDON WIN

SATURDAY'S GAME

Shandon beat Waiwetu by 8 gaznes to 4 in a Watt Cup match on the Shandon links on Saturday afternoon. Conditions were ideal for golf and the links were in good order, although slightly on the hard side on some of the greens. W. B. Reilly (Shandon) and R. G. Holland. (Waiwetu), the respective number I's, provided a fair gallery with an entertaining match, although really-good golf came only in spasms. Heilly won 2 up. i The outstanding feature of the game was the mariner in which Holland, after being 3 down at the turn, reduced Eeilly's lead on the return journey, to be all square with two holes to go Holland had finished his great rally, however, for at the' seventeenth a 6 and a loss were marked on his card. All chance of squaring the match at the last hole departed, when he misjudged his iron approach shot badly. The ball ended up almost at the back of the clubhouse in an impossible lie. His efforts to get out were hopeless anid, picking up, he conceded the hole and the match to liGillvReilly started off in excellent style and recorded a birdie 4 and a bogey 4 at the first and second holes respectively, Holland's pair of s*s, as a result of rather inaccurate approaching and- short play, leaving him 2 down. The 405-yard third hole was halved in steady s's, and the fourth was also, halved. Reilly was giving absolutely nothing away and his steadiness appeared to .worry Holland, who was inclined to be off the line at a number of the holes. As a result of a magnificent drive of nearly 300 yards Reilly won the fifth hole in 4. Holland, whose tee shot was well to the left, was short with his approach. Reilly increased his lead 'to 4 up- at the seventh, where he recorded another birdie. Holland began to improve, and, winning the short seventh in a neat 3, and halving the eighth and ninth in bogey figures, he turned for home 3 down. Scoresr for the first nine were:— ReUly: 445444453—37. - Holland: 555455353—40. [ At the tenth Holland played a magnificent approach to be within handy putting distance. He made no mistakes in his short work and won, back a hole in bogey figures. The eleventh was halved, but Reilly, playing very badly at the twelfth, lost another hole. He won it back at the thirteenth, which left him 2 up. The fourteenth ■Was halved, but Reilly, who was losing some of his steadiness, scored a 6 at the fifteenth against Holland's 5. The prospect of an exciting' finish had attracted quite a large gallery at this stage, and when Holland squared the game at the sixteenth with a bogey 3 to 4 they were rewarded. >Bbth got useful drives away at the 520-yard seventeenth, but, Holland, rather optimistically, took an iron second. He appeared to force. :ilte shot and paid the penalty. He was well short, whereas Reilly, who had played a brassy second, was handily placed. The latter took the hole in bogey figures and stood 1 up. The end came when-Holland misjudged his approach at the • eighteenth and picked up. Reilly came back in 42; Holland was 36 for eight holes. f RIBBANDS IN FORM. r ,H. H. C. Ribbands (Waiwetu) played brilliantly in his match with E. C. Hollis (Shandon) in the No. 2 position. He was altogether too good for his opponent on the. day and finally won 4 ■and 2, although the margin might have been greater had he not become a trifle reckless in the last nine. Ribbands's detailed scores were as follows: — Out: 434445343 ............ 34 In: 363637455 >.. ■42 ■'""■ Total 76 . Following are the results, Shandon players mentioned first:— W. B. Reilly beat R.
