MOUNTAIN TOP SOLD

Thousands of Alpinists who in the last seventy years ascended Matterhorn, 14,780 feet, under the impression they had really set foot on the very top of the mountain conquered by Edward Whymper, are wrong, says a Geneva message to the "New York Times." Since 1868 the top of Matterhorn has been in Geneva, where recently a local alpinist bought it for 5& francs at a sale. In 1868, M. F. Thioly, Geneva dentist and first president of the Geneva section of the Swiss Alpine Club, made an ascent of Matterhorn and, as was his custom when reaching a summit, took off the highest stone slab about a foot long and ten inches wide, in the presence of his guides, and he obtained from the Commune of Zermatt a certificate that this was the real top of Matterhorn. He took it home, where he kept it in a collect lion of Alpine souvenirs.
