POWER OF ARREST
TRAFFIC INSPECTORS
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day.
The suggestion to grant powers of arrest to traffic inspectors, provided they were properly trained, was approved by the South Island Motor Union at a conference today. Commenting on the North Island Union's objection to power being given to inspectors to arrest intoxicated drivers, a delegate pointed out that the Government had only to make inspectors special constables, to give them the powers of arrest.' An inspector had the power to forbid a motorist to drive and could remove a car to the police station.
Mr. A. Grayson said that the North Island Motor Union had no sympathy with the drunken motorist but wanted to preserve the liberty of the motoring public. A sober driver might be in danger of accusation by an unqualified inspector, as had happened in Auckland.
