A COLLEGE DEBATE
(To the Editor.)
Sir,—At his meeting on September 20 Mr. Barker mentioned that he had challenged several Labour Party members to a debate, and that Dr. McMillan, M.P., had agreed to debate against him under the auspices of Victoria University College Debating Society. Mr. Barker then stated that Dr. McMillan had revoked his decision because Mr. Barker was a young mar and more or less a newcomer to the political arena. In fairness to Dr. McMillan I feel compelled to explain the position. The Doctor accepted the invitation to debate provided that Parliament was still in session and he was in Wellington. As the session terminated earlier than was expected the Doctor was not available for the debate. On being approached Mr. Barker agreed to debate against a student, but later advised the secretary that his party had made other arrangements for him. It is thus clear that the early election prevented both candidates from debating at the college, and the reason given by Mr. Barker is not correct. — I am, etc.,
MARGARET SHORTALL, President,
Victoria University College Debating
Society.
