TRAVEL CLUB LECTURE
At last night's meeting of the Y.W.C.A.-Y.M.C.A. Travel Club, Mr. A. Leigh Hunt presided over a full attendance of members. Several groups of Hawaiian melodies were played by Mr. A. Mair's string quartet. A novsl competition in which members were required to list as many methods of travel as possible was won by Miss V. Marshall, who listed 50 varieties. Mr. H. V. Squire was second (47).
An interesting address was given by Mr. Peter Sergei, who attended at short notice on account of the absence through illness of the scheduled speaker, Mr. Leon Goetz.
Mi\ Sergei dealt with the theatre down the ages, with particular reference to the theatre, art, and culture of Burma, a country which he had recently visited. He referred to the decadence of the Western theatre, which could no longer be described as an educational agency, and which in the main, no longer catered to aesthetic needs. In Burma, however, the theatre with its traditional ballet, partly religious, had maintained its typical mode of expression for over five thousand years with only minor changes. "The tendency in British countries," said Mr. Sergei, "is for parents to have their children trained in one of the various forms of art, regardless of the child's natural bent—if any. In Burma, however, the children are allowed free expression in all of the various art forms, and later they specialise along the lines for which most aptitude is shown."
To this cause the speaker attributed the present-day importance of the theatre in Burma, together with the fact that it played such a full and natural part in the lives of the majority of the people. Following a question period, supper was served in conclusion of the programme.
