OUTSIDER SUCCESSFUL

THE GERALDINE CUP

PINK ROBE'S NARROW WIN

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

CHRISTCHURCH, September 22.

• The Geraldine Racing Club was well favoured for weather on the first day of its meeting. Fields were large, and the racing was full of interest all day. Under the win-and-place system there; was a small increase in the investments. EASY VICTOEY. Top Rank joined The Sandwich Man after half a mile in the First Hurdles Handicap, and, after drawing out clear five furlongs from home, he continued on to score easily by two lengths. Contract finished fast to oust Delrain from second, with The Sandwich Man a close fourth. Hostile fell at the first fence, and Chaste lost her rider at the' second-last fence. Mount Val made some poor jumps. Rdmarin was soon in charge in the Ohapi Hack Handicap, and in the straight he drew clear to win comfortably by half a length from Comus, who got up to beat Royal Refrain by a neck. Then came Sheeny, beating La Plata, Jedburgh, and Nigella for fourth. Royal Refrain stumbled and fell soon after passing the winning post, and his rider, L. J. Ellis, was taken to hospital. EXCITING FINISH. The Geraldine Cup was a good race, with an exciting finish. Alma and Pink Robe set the early pace. Made Money collided with the rail going out of the straight, losing ground. Pink Robe led Petersham and Wine Card to the straight, where Wine Card challenged, but the leader came on again to win by a short head. Petersham was over a length back, with Last Re-] frain, who finished well, next. Mungatoon, Travenna, and Lazybones, who made up a lot of ground in.the last| half-mile, followed. The winner has done most of her racing in Otago and Southland, and she had no recent form.! Dunstan, who was fancied after his good showing at Ashburton, failed to repeat, but he ran into serious trouble, j Tinker and Audo Girl set the pace 1 in the Geraldine Trot Handicap. Tinker led Grand Slam and Mongolian to the straight, where the field closed up. Dancing Pirate finished fast to win by a length, and Gentleman Joe beat Tinker on the post for second. Sterling Pointer was close up fourth, just in front of a bunch, in which Mongolian and Grand Slam were prominent, also! Anna Wong, who was not prominent] early. ! GAY PARADE AGAIN. In the Raukapuka Hack Handicap, Gay Parade and Gipsy Fair were the early leaders. Gay Parade led Dracula, Potent, and Garonne to the straight, where Gironde was making up ground. Gay Parade easily held his place, beating Dracula by two lengths. Gironde, finishing fast, was third, with Potent, Maori Maid, Lady Sincere, and Gipsy Fair following. This win, following his maiden success at Ashburton, made Gay Parade look a smart three-year-old. Nightcalm headed Silver Sail when the straight was reached in the Squat-! ters* Handicap. A little further on Cocksure started a strong run, and. he beat Nightcalm in the last stride by] a head, with Silver Streak -another head away. Ballad and Silver Sail were next, just in front of Second Innings, who began badly. NEVER TROUBLED. Privateer was not troubled to win the Orari Trot, going to the front five furlongs from home, from which stage he was never asked for his best. Myrna Loy at the end of a mile and fell, bringing down Master Potts and Eddystone. Oasis ran a good race, and Cyrano only weakened in the last furlong. Idlealong and Great Don were just behind the placed horses. In the Belfield Hack Handicap Recollection moved up fast from the halfmile post, leading Robant and Night Dress to the straight. Night Dress then challenged, wearing Recollection down to win by a length. Robant was two lengths back, followed by Screamer, who ran into trouble early. Glencos' was left at the post., Night Dress, with two wins inside a week, now looks like going to the class he promised earlier in his career to reach.
