CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS
A gusty northerly wind made conditions difficult for riders in the Wellington provincial amateur cycling championships on Saturday afternoon. The senior race, which was contested over a 48-mile course, from Petone to the Rimutaka foothills and back, had 19 starters, 15 of whom finished. The junior race was to Silverstream and back, a distance of 20 miles. Nineteen riders started arid 17 finished. The senior event was won by G. Amey (Port Nicholson) in 2hr 18min 32 2-ssec. W. Guey (Poneke) won the junior championship in 52min 33 4-ssec. Considering the strength of the wind the times were good. > The best time of the senior riders to the Rimutaka turn was registered by R. Duttori (lhr 14min 35sec), who was followed by G. Amey (lhr 16min).! K. McDonald (Petone), who had fifth best time for the turn, had the misfortune to crash while turning a corner. Williamson, the leading man, picked up ,a puncture half a mile from the turn. On the run home Amey put up a strong performance, passing several riders. TITLES Riding conditions,were most unfavourable for the West Coast (North Island) senior and junior cycling championhips which were decided on Saturday over a course from Marton to Palmerston North and back, a distance of 53 miles. The senior championship was won by I. Danielson, Wanganui, with R. Hobbs, Palmerston North, runner-up.' E. Wilson, Feilding, won the junior event, M. HAWKE'S BAY-POVERTY BAY (By Telegraph—Press Association.) TARADALE, September 17. The Hawke's Bay-Poverty Bay 50----mile road cycling championship, conducted by the Greendale Road Cycling Club at Taradale today, drew a field of 23. The race resolved* itself into a duel between W. Williams and S. Hunt, the former winning by a comfortable margin. " . , ' A. Fleming won the junior championship. •A sealed handicap event run m' conjunction with the championship resulted:—S. Hunt 1, W, Williams 2, R. Wilson (Dannevirke), 3. OTAGO 50-MILES CHAMPIONSHIP (By'Telegraph—Press Association.) DUNEDIN, September 18. The Otago 50-mile cycle championship on Saturday was won by C. W. Shilton, Rangiora, in 2hr Bmin 16sec. E. Rondel, Papanui, was second, and E. Boyd, Dunedin, third. > The South Island junior championship was won by N. McDonald, Diinedm'y who finished tenth. '." GOULBURN-SYDNEY RACES SYDNEY, September 17. The Goulburn to Sydney cycle road races were run on Saturday. The amateur contest was won by W. Barker, whose riding time was 5 hours 39 minutes. The professional section was won by J. Wood in 5 hours 46 minutes.
