BOXING

AMATEUR TITLES

TWO TO GISBORNE

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) GISBORNE, September 18. Gisborne was the only centre to win two titles at the New Zealand amateur boxing championships, which concluded, on Saturday night. D. Heeney, welterweight, retained his title, and W. Shaskey won the featherweight championship. Only one incident created dissatisfaction among the large crowd. That was the disqualification of R. Branch, Auckland, for striking W. Jack, Timaru, when the latter was under the protection of the referee. The Jamieson Belt for the most scientific boxer was awarded to J. O'Connor, Christchurch, lightweight champion, who also took the Jamieson and Parisian Cups. The Auckland heavyweight McHugh, possessing a devastating punch, gave an outstanding display in his class, only C. Marsh, Greymouth, rivalling him in speed and ringcraft. Harsh ran both the 1937 light-heavyweight champion and the 1938 champion to close decisions. In the light-heavyweight division W. Lister took the title from his brother, T. Lister.
