WORKMAN INJURED
TRUCK LEAVES ROAD
(By Telegraph— Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. When a Heathcote County Council rubbish collection truck ran off a road and fell several feet into a garden at the side of a residence in. Hackthorne Road this morning, head injuries and a dislocated shoulder were suffered by James Murphy, who was working on the truck. Murphy was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital, but his condition is not serious. The brakes of the truck failed as it was going down a steep right-of-way and the vehicle became unmanageable and charged over, a small stone wall and down a fifteen-foot bank into a garden, where it came to rest on its side. The driver, G. Michin, was in the cab when the truck went over the bank. He scrambled out with -io more serious injury than a slight scratch on his ear. Murphy was standng on the running board of the truck. out for a naval miracle, these forces -vould be instantly and irrevocably cut oft." Mussolini derives, in Italy, strength and power from the "new Roman Smpire." He must know that to fly in he face of the British Empire would 3e to/ write "Finis" to his new empire. Sven supposing that Italy could close he Mediterranean to British shipDing for a few months, this would rejuire Italy's whole effort, while it vould take little effort on the part of he British Empire to close the approaches to the Mediterranean, and in particular to cut off Italy from her tew "East African Empire." Wars are lot won so much by effort as by adlerence to the principle of "economy )f effort." So far as it is possible to pronounce ny judgment upon the Mediterranean ituation of today, one must admit hat the position of the British Empire > strong—and getting stronger month )y month under the gigantic re-arma-nent programme. Italy, since she has acquired an East African Empire, has greater reason for riendship with Great Britain than ever >efore.
