"TOO OLD AT 40" FALLACY
(To the Editor.) Sir,—-It may seem strange, but apparently there are still leading people in Government, Civil Service, commercial, and industrial spheres, who do not know: (1) That history, experience, and common sense deny the ridiculous, nay cruel, blunder in the above slogan. (2) That the United States of America, years ago, granted legislative protection for older workers, having discovered that of all workers graded "excellent," only 18 per cent, were under 35 years of age; also that, in the matter of quantity, older employees produced more than the younger. According to the Minister of Labour—a married lady, by the way —that same Government continues keeping a watchful eye on this vital subject, presumably with a view to such further action as may be necessary. Does anyone know what percentage of our total population is aged over 40, of our employed population is aged over 40, and of our unemployed is aged over 40? Public pledges to promptly scrap the absurd, out-of-date and mischievous error can be, and one hopes will be secured from candidates for Parliamentary honours. Justice, humanity, and fair play demand the explosion of this absurd fallacy.—l am, etc., JUBILANT SIXTY.
