SATURDAY'S RUNS
PEWTER POT AND BATON
Harriers on Saturday enjoyed good weather but had heavy courses. The Perston Baton was run by Olympic, and the Pewter Pot by Brooklyn. PERSTON BATON. The Olympic Club held its Perston Baton relay race, four teams of four participating. The venue was Paremata, where the members and their friends !were the guests of Mr. J. R: Perston, president of the club, and donor of the baton. The course of approximately 10£ miles led from the president's residence, down the main road to Pahautanui, and then followed the old road over' the hill to Plimmerton. The home stretch lay along the new road, across the Paremata bridge, and back to the starting point. Each runner covered exactly a quarter of the distance. The race was won by No. 3 team, consisting of G. Murray (captain), J. Barber, A. Richardson, and j L. Myers. This team's time for the race was 53min 17sec. Other placings were: No. 2 team (A. O. Fisher captain, W. Watt, J. Blanchfield, and J. Duigan), 2; No. 4 team (S. Reid, captain, W. Shaw, A. W. McNaught, and J. Bezer) 3; No. 1 team (D. Sutherland, captain),/, A. B. Chappell, L. Goetzlof, and A. Shaw), 4. The race was followed all the way by a bus containing spectators. Next Saturday the club will hold the. Philp Shield teams' race at Miramar. PRESBYTERIAN CLUB. The annual field day of the Presbyterian Club was held on Lyall Bay beach on Saturday. The • club was divided into six teams under the captaincy of Dick, Seelye, Armstrong, Jardine, Bay, and Aston. The events were 100 yards, cockfighting, 880 yards, long jump*, 220 yards, wheelbarrow race, and relay. With only the relay to run, three teams were, leading, Aston's (12 points) and Seelye's and Bay's (8 points each). Seelye's team - won the relay, for which points were doubled, and- the position was that his team • had tied with Aston's, each having 14 points To eliminate one, two further events were add for members of the two teams, 100 yards and. 880 yards. Seelye's team obtained first and third in the former, and second and third in the latter, and so finally ran out the winners by 21 points to. 19. Afternoon tea was served by the club's vice-presidents and their wives. Next week's run, the last of the season for attendance purposes, will be held from the Wadestown Presbyterian Church. - *VARSITY CLUB. The University Club ran its annual race for the Endeavour Cup, which was presented to the club last year by Don Viggers. The race was a sealed handicap over eight miles. Starting from the university, the trail led through Northland to the top of Tinakori hill and down into Wadestown. After going round Wilton Road it led up Old Karori Road, followed the tram line through the Northland tunnel and so back to the university. Farquhar took the lead, followed by Newall and Scrymgeour. At the Northland terminus Scrymgeour pulled out in front followed by O'Flynn, who took the lead at the top of the hill. Along the top of the hill Newall gained a slight lead, but was overtaken by O'Flynn before Wadestown was reached. At Wilton Road Scrymgeour established a lead which he maintained, finishing first, 40sec ahead of Newall, who was a similar distance ahead of O'Flynn. The winner's time was 48min ssec." Da la Mare was the winner of the cup—his net time being 44min. BAPTIST CLUB. The Baptist Club held a run of about five TOiles from the home of Mr. A. Carter, 18 Scapa Terrace, Karori. The trail'led up Parkvale Road to the top of the hills, along the ridge westward, then- down the Makara Road into Karori. A run-in was held from the Council Chambers, the result of which wasr.R. Wadham 1, P. Kendon 2, J. Ritchie 3. Next week's run, which will be from Hataitai, will be the last club run of the season. SCOTTISH CLUB. Thirty members attended the Scottish Club's run from the Oriental Football Club's gymnasium, Hataitai. Several non-competing members had made the trip to New Plymouth to see the New Zealand championships. A slow pack climbed to the Mount Victoria ridge, following this to Palliser Road and down to Oriental Bay, via Evans Bay Road. The fast pack followed the ridge to the wireless station, down the western side of the hill, to the Fever Hospital, down on-to Coromandel Street, and went along the Town Belt to Melrose, the return being made via Rodrigo Road, Crawford Road, and Moxham Avenue. The outing was the last club run of the season. Next Saturday the Consolation race will be run at Woburn. METHODIST CLUB. The Me~thodist Club held its closing run for the season from Trinity Methodist Church, Newtown. The trail laid by K. Ayers and G. Thompson led up Mem Street to Wellington Road to the top of the hill, thence to the back of the Zoo, and to the hills above Island Bay, to return along Hanson Street and Adelaide Road. One pack had a xun over;the Bennett Memorial road race course. The club secretary, Mr. T. Hinde, thanked the club patron, Mr. S. Trevethick, and the: president, Rev. W. Parker, for their services during the season, and these stauncn supporters commented on the good fellowship existing. Afternoon tea was served by ladies of the church. BROOKLYN CLUB. The Brooklyn Club held its five-mile race for the Pewter Pot. This is one of the most popular faces of the season. Results proved the teams evenly matched. The 20 members were divided into five teams, captained by D. Pedersen, P. Argu, M. Moir, A. Thompson, and G. Appleby, respectively. The race started at Broadway, Miramar, and R. Wilson took the lead till Hobart Street was reached, when A. Thompson took the lead followed by Argue, Moir, and Pedersen, the rest of the field being close behind. Along Park' Road, Pedersen challenged the leaders, and Appleby moved up from the rear to join Argue and Moir, while Geo. Fanning led a bunch o"f runners about 25 yards behind. Pedersen was leading when Camperdown Road hill was reached, while Thompson was gamely hanging on to second place. . However, Appleby managed to move up to the lead by the time the top of Pretoria Road was reached, and from this point maintained the lead. Pedersen and Thompson had a good tussle for second place, but Pedersen proved superior. It was interesting to see. the five captains fill the first five places, and each took a keen interest in seeing his team mates finish. Some twenty-five members of the CM Club gathered at the residence of Mr. A. E. Werry, vicd-president of the club, Riverside Drive, Lower Hutt, on Saturday afternoon for the weekly run. The runners chose their own course, which led from Riverside Drive via Wihdham Avenue to. the foot ot the Burnside track, up which a speedy ascent was made. Thick gorse-was encountered on top of the ridge. Good progress was made on the down run through the pine woods, and bacK home via Norton Park Avenue. Those who did well were R. McLoughlin, J. C. McPhee, and A. Thomas. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Werry, and was greatly appreciated. Next week's run, the final one or the season, will be the consolation race from the residence of Mr. R. S. Oclell, Ngaio.
