NINETY YEARS OLD
MRS. S. A. HOWARD'S BIRTHDAY
Mrs. Sarah Anne Howard, of Wellington, celebrated her ninetieth birthday last week. A pioneer, having landed in New Zealand 64 years ago, Mrs. Howard has been resident in Wellington for the past 47 years, and has endeared herself to a very large circle of friends. Her birthday was marked by the numbers of telegrams and messages of congratulation which were received from friends in all parts of the country. Mrs. Howard has a family of six daughters and two sons, the majority of whom were present at the pleasant party on Tuesday, at which intimate friends gathered to do her honour. Her daughters are Mrs. G. R. C. Jackman, Mrs. F. L. O'Connell, Mrs. W. Fear, Mrs. W. Mears, Mrs. T. Thorley, and Mrs. T. Jackman (Tasmania). The sons are Messrs. Reginald Howard and H. C. Howard, both of Wellington. A birthday tea' was set in the sitting-room, which was gay with flowers from Mrs. \ Howard's many bouquets. A large cake made by Mrs. Thorley and iced ■by a grand-daughter, Miss Joan Fear, occupied pride of place, and was handsomely decorated with 90 kewpies and the figures "90," in silver beads. There were 28 people present, including, besides old friends, some of the guest of honour's nineteen grandchildren and eighteen great-grandchildren. The guests included Mrs. Williamson, Mrs. A. S. Johns, Mrs. Gould, Mrs. McDougall, Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. Fullertou, Mrs. Tucker, Mrs. Guy, Mrs. Davis and Miss Lesley Davis, Mrs. Hill, Mrs. C. JS. Stewart, Mrs. H. C. Howard, Mrs. Cyril Jackman, Mrs. Rogers, Mrs. Arthur Jackman and her daughter, Diana.
