WEIGHT-FOR-AGE RACING
The lack of weight-for-age racing in New Zealand was?referred to by Mr. K. Austin, president of the Oamaru Jockey Club, in a review of the club's activities at the annual meeting of members. Mr. Austin claimed that the club should make an effort to encourage that type of racing during the coming year. "The club is now in a position where it could consider putting on some type of weight-for-age race," he continued. "We owe racing a responsibility by trying to encourage good horses to come to our meetings." A weight-for-age race might probably be run at a loss, but the club owed something to racing. There were only three clubs in the South Island at which weight-for-age races were run, and Oamaru, although a small club, should follow their example.
