EARLY MORNING FIRE
An outbreak of fire which occurred between the ceiling and the roof caused slight damage to a threestoreyed building, 63 Willis Street, early yesterday morning. It is believed that the fire was started by sparks from an adjacent building. The call was received by the Wellington Fire Brigade at 2.43 a.m., and four engines from the Central Fire Station and one from the Thorndon Station turned out. The fire was extinguished without difficulty with bucket pumps. The building is owned by Mr. E. Johnston.
One of the, most comprehensive surveys made of motor traffic accidents is that conducted annually by an insurance company of the United States. Covering a research into the 1937 toll j of accidents in that country, the com-j pany's statisticians analysed reports of | 40,300 fatalities and 1,221,090 injuries' in last year's traffic accidents. The survey showed that 37 per cent, of the deaths and 25 per cent, of the injuries were caused by vehicles exceeding the speed limit.
