CHRISTIAN LIVING
The preacher at a Holy Communion service at St. John's Presbyterian Church last night was Dr. Ralph Harlow, D.D., professor at. Smith College,: Northampton, Massachusetts, U.S.A., who took as his text the story of Pilate; washing his hands at the trial of Christ. "Jesus Christ is the Prince of Peace,j and the way of life is His way of life," said Dr. Harlow. The hope of the Christian Church, which included! churches of all denominations, Dr. \ Harlow. added, was that great spirits | throughout the years had seen that the worship of Christ could not be substi-i tuted for doing His will. The Church! was beginning to realise that not only j must Christ be worshipped, but Hisj way of life must also be practised.' "This would lead to the end of war,; race prejudice, and exploitation everywhere," said Dr. Harlow. Earl Haig, Dr. Harlow added, had said that-if another war came the responsibility would be at the door of' the Christian Church, and Lloyd George had declared that the Christian Church might just as well close its door if another war came. General Trasker Bliss, Chief of Staff of the United States Army during the last few months of the Great War, had said: ''The responsibility for peace and the ending of war lies at the gate of the Christian Church." ; "It is claimed everywhere," said Dr. Harlow, "that Christianity involves unselfishness-—not the piling up of wealth, but service and co-operation —yet, when it comes to the existing economic order in which there is much selfishness and greed, -we Christians j wash out hands of it." Dr. Harlow said he had seen thousands of dollars' worth of fresh fruit i thrown into Boston Harbour to rot. Crates of the finest peaches were left to j rot in Californian fields this summer. Oranges were taken into the fields and I crude oil was poured upon them Avhilej women and children starved for the vitamins they contained.
