IMPORTERS' VIEW
Speaking on behalf of the United Kingdom Manufacturers' and New Zealand Representatives' Association, and the New Zealand Importers' Federation, Mr. David Hogg said they were much concerned about the alarming increase of taxation, which was being felt at all angles, especially from that of business. Thg ; >present 71oadV;wa£ a grievous1 weight to carry, and with further increases proposed business would be still less fitted to provide the Government with income tax derived; from profits. As costs increased, so would prices rise, and this would be passed on to consumers who would find their purchasing power reduced. The reduced consumption would automatic, .ally reflect on business and reduced business would not yield the revenue required by the Government.
"Taxation has passed the stage when benefits can be derived by the people of New Zealand by increased taxation," added Mr. Hogg. "It is our opinion the benefits lie in the opposite direction, namely, reduced taxation., In view of world conditions we want a strong, virile people fitted .to meet whatever lies lies before us, but tb> cannot be achieved by sops."
