DAY IN PARLIAMENT
SOCIAL SECURITY SCHEME
. The fact that the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) is getting a little impatient with the progress through the House of Representatives of the Social Security Bill, which has been before the House since August 16, was plainly evident yesterday, when he moved for urgency for the Committee stages. For the whole of the afternoon and up to 1.20 o'clock this morning, the Minister of Finance (the Hon. W. Nash) was under almost constant cross-examination by the Opposition, who were persistent in their anxiety to obtain more minute information. They had a good ally in Mr, A. C. A. Sexton (Independent, Franklin), who found more to say than any other member. The Minister's grip of detail was revealed in the answers he supplied to the wide range of questions fired at him. When the House rose 94 out of the 139 clauses of the Bill had been disposed of, leaving only those dealing with portion of the maternity benefit section, and the financial basis of the scheme to be dealt with. There was only one division' during the whole of yesterday, and that was on a closure motion.
