TENNIS LEAGUE
SEASON REVIEWED
With twenty-one clubs affiliated, the membership of the Wellington Lawn Tennis League was fully maintained during the past season, according to the report to be presented at the annual meeting on October 3. This shows the popularity of. the league's endeavours to provide competitive tennis at a low financial cost. The most remarkable and outstanding feature of the championships over the past six years is that every title in every event has annually changed hands, the report says, With 40 teams, consisting of 320 players, in the interclub championships the contest in four grades was carried to a successful conclusion. The following are the holders of the 1937-38 championships: Senior grade, Vogelmorn Club; senior B grade: TeHuinga Club; intermediate grade, St. Giles Club; junior grade, United Recreation Club.
The champion of champions event showed a marked improvement in the standard of play. The winners were: R. Martell (Vogelmorn Club) and Miss S. Jones (Challenge Club).
The Easter championship was run in two grades and, although the weather was not good, all events were keenly contested.
The balance-sheet reveals an improved state of the league's finances. The management committee has steadily increased the financial position and within three years £01 has been placed to the league's credit without taxing the resources of the clubs. The league has, during the past season, made further advancement towards consolidating its position as a leading body in Wellington district. With a trust fund for courts of £91 it is progressing on the right lines to secure its own courts, and whilst there is nothing to report the management committee has made negotiations in this respect.
