GENERALLY FIRM
PRICES OF LIVESTOCK
REPORTS FROM SALEYARDS
Although the entries 'were, heavier than usual prices were generals^ fl^m at the Johnsonville livestock sale yesterday.'
The yardings of beef were smaller than average at the Westfleld sale, and first-class offerings came forward. Bullocks sold to £19, which was the best price for some months, and the average quotations were firmer. Wethers showed little alteration on late rates and ewes improved Is to 2s a head. A fair entry of lambs realised late rates, with values ranging from 16s to 31s. Calves were yarded in more than average numbers, and realised firm late rates. Values for a slightly larger yarding of pigs were firm. The few heavy grades in the entry of fat cattle at the Burnside sale consisted mainly of medium bullocks. ' The demand was keen, and the supply barely came up to requirements, with the result that the sale opened keenly, and bullocks were 10s to 15s a head dearer. Cows and heifers, of which there were few high-quality sorts, were up £1 a head. . JOHNSONVILLE PRICES. Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., and Abraham and Williams, Ltd., report that at the Johnsonville stock sale a large yarding of cattle and a larger yarding of sheep than usual were' offered. No prime bullocks came forward, the yarding consisting chiefly of medium weight,, with a few pens- of Jight and unfinished cattle. With; the exception of plain bullocks all classes ■'met with a ready sale at prices flrra on those ruling last week. The cows and heifers were of good quality, showing no alteration on last week's rates. An exceptionally good line of runners was yarded, which met with keen competition at prices slightly higher than those ruling up-country. The yarding of wethers was of indifferent quality, only a few pens of heavyweignt sheep coming forward, the balance of the yarding consisting of light prime black-face two-tooths, with a few pens of unfinished wethers. All prime quality wethers met with a steady sale, with prices showing no alteration, while unfinished wethers were not sought after. A keen sale resulted for ewes, with little alteration in-prices. There was a good demand for hoggets, with, prices firm.
