WELLINGTON CHALLENGE
QUESTION OF REFEREE
In the event of Otago still holding the Ranfurly Shield, the match between • Wellington and Otago on the Wellington team's southern tour is to be for the trophy. The question was raised at the meeting of the management committee of the Wellington Rugby Union last night as to whether there should be an outside referee for the match. A motion asking the Otago Union to- submit a list of outside referees was defeated, and it was decided merely to ask .Otago to_ forward a list of the Otago interprovmcial ref GI"GGS Mr.'J. Moffitt said he thought Otago should be asked to submit a list of outside referees. "It is something we are entitled to," he said. "It is a privilege we have always extended. I think it would be more in the interests of both unions, particularly the union holding the shield, if this course was followed.1 We extended the privilege or the right to every Union over^a number of years when we held the ShThe "chairman (Mr. J. N. Millard) said he would not like the impression to be formed that Wellington would not get a fair run from an Otago referee. He was sure Wellington would get just as f.air a run from an Otago referee as from any other referee. Mr. J. D. King asked whether,it was Wellington's definite intention to make a special effort to win the shield.- _ Lieutenant-Colonel T. J. King said he took it that if Otago still held the shield Wellington would make a special effort. Mr. Millard said he did not think that question really had any bearing on the other.matter. " . After the motion asking Otago to submit a list of outside referees had been defeated, Mr. G. F. W. Jackson moved and Mr. H. D. Morgan seconded, that the Otago Union be asked tb submit the names of its interprovincial referees. The. motion was carried. MATCHES APPROVED.
The following matches, were approved:—Petone senior B v. Patea, at Patea, and Petone fourth B v. Carterton, at Carterton, on Saturday next; St. Anne's Parish (Newtown) v. St. Joseph's Parish (Te Aro), Wakefield Park, Saturday; Hutt v. Masterton, third grade, Strand Park, Saturday; and Hutt v. Red Stars, senior grade, Masterton. September 17: N.I.M.U. v. Standard Insurance Co., Prince of Wales Park or Western Park, Saturday, September 17; Wellington third (1) v. Napier Technical Old Boys, Napier, Saturday; Bing, Harris, and Co., Ltd., v. Ross and Glendining, Ltd., September 24. , ■ The Poneke Club advised that arrangements were iri train for the Tukapa Club, New Plymouth, to play Poneke at Wellington at Easter next year, and that, if possible, it was desired that the match be played at Athletic Park on April 8. The fourth, fifth, and sixth grade city v. suburban games, which had. to be postponed last Saturday, are to be playecf on Saturday week. It was decided to make the fourth grade fixture the early game at Athletic Park.
