SWORDSMAN RETIRED
CAPTAIN SCOTT RESUMES
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
TAKANINI, September 6,
Baron Alfonso, who was prepared for the Auckland Meeting by C. H. Goodall, has returned to F. J. Smith, who had charge of this gelding earlier in his career. Owned by Mr. W. Hosking, it is intended to give him a special preparation for the Wellington Meeting, but an improvement in his barrier manners will have to be effected for him to succeed on the trip.
F. J. Smith is contemplating a trip to Wellington with a fair-sized team, but at the moment is a little concerned as to whether he will be able to infuse sufficient work into his charges for that fixture, as weather conditions of late have played havoc with his tracks.
Swordsman was retired to the paddock after his. recent victory at Epsom F. J. Smith stating that both he and the owner, Mr. W. Hosking, were dissatisfied with the penalty of four seconds for the win, considering that it was altogether to severe. It is a matter for conjecture whether the Peter Volo horse will do much more racing, as he has proved himself at the stud, and last season served twentyfour mares.
Atarau King, who was handed over to J. G. Robertson just prior to the Auckland Meeting, has again returned to S. Matthews's stable at Takanini.
C. H. Goodall's team is to be augmented at an early date by the novice pacer, Captain Scott, who has been on the easy list for some time. Purchased at a good figure this gelding has yet to realise expectations. The Nelson Bingen mare Barney Bingen is a recent addition to the same stable,' which now shelters ten horses.
