BRIGHT BATTING

MFCABE GETS HIS 1000

CRICKET AT FOLKESTONE

WARD IN BEST FORM

United Press Association—By Electric Tele-

graph-—Copyright (Received September 6, noon.) LONDON, September 5.

S. J. McCabe, after his recent failures, jumped right into his best batting form when the match between Australia and Sir Pelham Warner's XI was continued at Folkestone today. In playing a dashing innings for 91 he finally managed to take his aggregate for the tour past 1000. Another Australian player who was in form was the slow bowler Ward,, who took seven wickets. Scores at the close of play were: — Australia 390 and 204 for five. England XI 223. Play was resumed today in cool and dull weather. Australia's score at stumps on Saturday was 366 for eight wickets, the unfinished partnership being between Waite (50) and O'Reilly (28). The tail-enders were dismissed within an hour. Waite recorded his highest score of the tour and hit ten 4's. O'Reilly was more sedate than usual and carried his bat for an excellent 40, leaving Australia in a sound position against their opponents' strong batting side. Several good English wickets went cheaply before lunch, when the score was 104 for four, Waite and Ward causing a collapse which was finally arrested by Ames. AMES'S SPARKLING KNOCK. Big leg breaks from Ward resulted in the dismissal of Paynter and Coinpton and England had lost four for 89 when Ames came in. He immediately showed fine form and made a sparkling 50 in 45 minutes. Ward, who was giving his most imposing performance of the tour, continued to bowl magnificently, with vicious spin. He had Valentine stumped and then sent back Ames with a smart, low right-hand catch off his own bowling. Ames batted for 80 minutes and hit a 6 and ten 4's, O'Reilly, in dismissing Alfred Pope, took.his hundredth wicket for the tour. G. Pope hit usefully while the tail-enders were being dismissed. The innings lasted 180.minutes. McCabe and Brown had scored 45 in 35 minutes in Australia's second innings when a catch at the wicket ended Brown's polished innings. A boundary from Wilkinson carried McCabe^s. score to 26 and he thus reached his 1000 runs for the tour. McCabe, with a glorious array of hooks, pulls, and drives, looked certain to reach his century when s he was superbly caught low down in the gully. He batted for 75 minutes, during which he made 91 of the total addition to the score of 139. There were seventeen 4's in his contribution. Badcock was dashing along when Woolley held a great single-handed catch in the slips. Australia passed 200 in two hours. Details: — AUSTRALIA. First Innings. Brown, b A. V.
