NORTHERLY WINDS SOON

Special .forecast for Wellington:—

Light and variable winds, but northerlies setting in later and gradually freshening. Weather fair to fine, with cool temperatures. The general forecast for the Domininion as a whole, issued at noon today j for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is i for northerly winds predominating in j the South Island. In the North Island j winds will be variable in direction, butj northerlies will gradually become more general. Winds will be light to moderate in force, but will later freshen somewhat about and south of Cook Strait. The weather will be mainly fair to fine, but there will be considerable cloud, and in places fog or drizzle in the mornings, and scattered rain will gradually develop in Westland and in the far south. Temperatures will be cool, with some inland frosts tonight. Since yesterday barometric pressure has risen slightly in the north, and pressure is now high and very uniform over the Dominion, except in the far south where it is falling slowly. Southerly winds still predominated this morning in the North Island, but they are now only light, whereas yesterday they were fresh to strong from New Plymouth and Tauranga to about Cook Strait. Qver the South Island light to north-easterlies to northerlies are blowing. Almost the whole Dominion had fair to fine weather yesterday, the only exception being the coastal district between Banks Peninsula and East Cape. In that area there were light showers or scattered drizzles, but falls were very light indeed, the highest being one of only six points reported from Portland Island. Temperatures have been cold, and there were frosts last night in the South Island. \ Auckland's weather yesterday was fine and bright, although cloud increased somewhat during the afternoon. The wind was a light southerly. Similar conditions prevailed this morning atfer a clear and cold night. The maximum temperature yesterday was 57.1 degrees and the minimum 38.1 degrees. Wellington had a moderate but decreasing southerly wind. The weather as a whole was overcast, but there were brief intervals of sunshine which totalled two hours. Frequent but very light showers fell throughout the day, but only three points of rain were recorded at Kelburn. Temperatures were cold, the maximum being 47.4 degrees and the minimum 42.7 degrees, while the grass minimum last night was 37.1 degrees. It was calm and overcast early this morning, but the clouds gradually -'dispersed and there was some welcome sunshine. It was overcast in Christchurch yesterday morning, and there were some slight passing showers during the afternoon. The wind was light f and rather variable, and temperatures were cold with a moderate frost at night. The maximum was 49.9 degrees and the minimum 37.3 degrees, • while the gross minimum fell to 22.9 degrees. The weather this morning was cloudy with a light wind from the northeast. Dunedin enjoyed bright sunshine from a cloudless sky, the wind being a cool north-easterly breeze. A light north-easterly was still blowing this morning, but it: was then overcast, ,
