MR. BARKER'S CHALLENGES
(To the Editor.)
Sir,— According to "The Post" of August 24, Mr. W. L. Barker is very busy issuing challenges in all directions—to Mr. Scrimgeour for an hour's broadcast, to Labour members for debates, etc. The quality of the challenges may be estimated by the fact that Mr. Barker himself accepted Ta. challenge by the Rev. O. E. Burton, M.A., to debate the question, "That the principles of the National Party are fundamentally opposed to Christianity," and later declined to proceed, with the debate. This was a considerable disappointment to the people, between sixty and seventy, who heard the challenge made and accepted.—l am, etc., A. C. BARRINGTON. [In his address at Miramar on July 12, Mr. Barker stated that he declined to accept the challenge as his committee had suggested religion was not a subject to be debated on a public platform. He was ready to discuss the question privately, he said, but public debate would lead only to ill-feeling.]
