DEFEAT INTO VICTORY
Jamaica, which is being torn by labour troubles, became British by one of those twists of fate which become historic, says the "Manchester Guardian." It was originally part of the old Spanish empire in America. In .1656 Cromwell fitted out an expedition under Perm and Venables to reduce the Span, ish.-island of Hispaniola. - The attack met with unexpectedly strong resistance, however, and was beaten off. In. days it was not wise for naval commanders to return- home and acknowledge that they had been defeated. So Perm and Venables concocted a plan to attack Jamaica and retrieve their fajlen fortunes. The plan succeeded. They made' a surprise descent on the isiand and achieved an easy victory. With the surrender of Jamaica in their pocket they came home with their "tails up." And Jamaica has belonged to us ever since. But it would probably riot have been British today but' for the- "accident" of that defeat at Hispaniplaic-.".
