CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED
A crowded attendance in the Labour Hall, Petone, last evening, watched the Hutt Valley Boxing Association's amateur championships. Almost without exception the bouts were of uniformlygood quality and the boys well matched. Owing to the outbreak of measles a number of the scheduled "bouts could, not be held. Officials were as follows:—Referee, Mr. L. Watson; judges, Messrs. J. P. Gaynor and R. Brien; announcer, Mr. W. McKee; time-keepers, Messrs. D. G. Fraser and T. Blyth. The professional, H. Dunn, gave an exhibition bout, A. Byrne and J. Martin each having two rounds with him. Results were as follows:— * Junior Lightweight—A. McMullins (Railway Workshops), 9st 61b, beat R. Dixon (Petone), 9st 61b. The winner was too strong for his opponent and the bout did not last beyond the second round. The loser failed to keep his left out. E. Robb (Feathertson), 9st 61b, beat M. Harding (Petone), 9st 51b. Robb was the sturdier boy and landed some strong blows on his tall opponent. The last round was a hectic affair. Final.—McMullins gained the decision in the final. He used his longer reach judiciously. Junior Flyweight.—P. Djinn (Railway Workshops), 7st 91b, beat F. Gardiner (Petone), 7st 91b. Dunn gained most of his points in the last round. There was not much between the boys. Junior Welterweight—B. Fairbrother (Railway Workshops), 9st 111b, beat S. Benge CFeatherston), lOst 71b. Benge was an aggressive and dour fighter, but Fairbrother was more collected and a scientific boxer. Senior Lightweight.—T. Dunn (Railway Workshops), 9st 71b, beat S. Morris (Featherston), 9st 91b. In a bout that was not particularly exciting Dunn showed himself to be the cleverer boxer. , Senior Heavyweight.—A. Macaskill (Petone), 12st 61b, beat A. Hirst (Railway Workshops), 12st 71b. This bout did not get really going until the last round. Macaskill then floored his opponent, who was afterwards obviously groggy, and the fight was stopped. Senior Fly weight—-B.
