Pas de Cheval, meaning horse's hoof, is the name claimed for the Lackham— Lady Elusive colt in the Wanganui Debutant field.

Algerian, Beau Vite, Biddy Girl, Kobi, Silver Bat, Silver-Stick, and Varimond are engaged in both the Wanganui Debutant Stakes and the Avondale Stakes.

There is not a single South Island horse in the field for the Wanganui Debutant Stakes this year. Southern stables are usually represented. The Wrecker's second, beaten half a head, in the September Handicap at Canterbury Park on Saturday, suggests that this five-year-old half-brother to Historic may come into solid form before this season passes. Historic was also slow in developing. Surprise entries for the New Zealand Cup include the Trentham maiden four-year-old Kinloch (Martarma — Lucinda) and the 1934 Great Easter winner The Masquerader, now eight years old.

The North Island has contributed 31 of the 56 entries for this year's New Zealand Cup. Of the South Island's 25, fourteen are from Riccarton stables. In addition to riding Russian Ballet in the Wanganui Guineas, B. H. Morris has been engaged to ride Brazen King and Laughing Lass in their first-day engagements at Wanganui. S. Wilson's mounts on Thursday will be Morning Flight, Red Cat, Granvale, Liane, Peerless, and Russian Ballet, and on Saturday he will be on Peerless. W. J. Broughton will be on Warehi and Sporting Gift on Thursday and on Gay Son in the Wanganui Guineas. A. Messervey has been booked to ride Taurangi in the Wanganui Guineas. New Zealand-bred two-year-olds sold at the Sydney and Melbourne yearling sales and at, present in work in both centres 'have been named as follows: —Wilson, by Siegfried—Lilock; Xavier, by Lord Warden—El Boa; Sun Belle, by Beau Pere —Summertime; Shy, by Beau Pere—Cocoanut; Maschera, by Ringmaster—Veil; and Fredwyn, by Siegfried—Enmity. ,
