A "SWARM" OF BIRDS
Havoc is being caused on a rarm in the Orange Free State (South Africa) by a "swarm" of birds. Three years ago a small flock of these birds arrived, and since then it has multiplied at an amazing rate. The birds are of a greyish colour, and resemble the ordinary vlei finch. They are very tame and build up to 200 nests in one tree. They fly about in flocks of between 2000 and 3000. The farmer has made repeated efforts to drive them away, but without success. On one day alone, with the aid of all his farm labourers, he killed enough to fill three sacks. When in flight the birds resembled a swarm of locusts, and the damage they do to the crops is almost as great.
