DOCTORS' VOTE
"PREFERENCE, NOT OPPOSITION"
(By Telegraph—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, August 26. Referring to the secret vote of doctors of New Zealand on the Government's social security proposals announced by Dr. J. P. S. Jamieson, president of the New Zealand branch of the British Medical Association, recently, Dr. D. G. McMillan, M.P. for Dunedin West, stated at Stratford tonight that the vote was not one of dpposition but of preference. Because the doctors preferred the. B.M.A. scheme, it did not follow that they would not work the Government scheme. Dr. McMillan quoted from a pamphlet written by Dr. Jamieson a year ago in which he said that if a universal scheme was introduced doctors would have no option but to work it. Dr. McMillan said he had no doubt that the medical men of New Zealand would in a few years compliment the Government on its act in bringing in such a scheme. In support of this opinion, he quoted English authorities showing that, although violent opposition had been offered before its introduction, today none were more enthusiastic than the medical authorities.
