STRIKE THREAT

AUSTRALIAN COAL MINES

CONFERENCE THAT FAILED

(Received August 27, 9 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 26. Mr. Justice Cantor, of the Industrial Commission, had an informal talk with the coal miners' representatives and the colliery proprietors today in regard to the present dispute. The coal mine owners indicated that they are not prepared to yield to the recent threats of a general strike, nor to concede any of the claims made by the Miners' Federation. The conference lasted for only a few minutes. A stay-in strike is at present occurring in the Broken Hill Proprietary's coal mine Lambton B, at Newcastle. Forty-seven miners who have already remained below for 48 hours have received some food which was secretly sent down by sympathisers. The dispute arose over the employment of 'an inexperienced coal loader.
