TO GO TO THE STUD
(Special to the "Evening Post.") TAKANINI, August 20. The Gay Shield mare Gay Sheila, who has been returned to the Dominion from Australia to be mated with Foxbridge, was an outstanding performer in the early stages of her career. She won three races as a two-year-old and went to even greater heights in the following term, her successes including the Sylvia Park Handicap at the Pakuranga Hunt Meeting, the Champion Hack Plate, Avondale Guineas, and Great Northern Guineas. She was unluckily beaten in the Railway Handicap by Silver Streak, and broke down while contesting the Derby. It was during an enforced spell that she badly injured a hock, and she was not the same mare afterwards, although she did win a. small event in Australia. Gay Shield is an elder relative of Gay Blonde, Gay Sheik, Gay Brunette, Marie's Acre, and Philcourt. Incidentally, the most impressive-looking two-year-old in last Saturday's parade was a half-sister. During her racing career Gay Sheila was a winner of £1730 in stakes.
