DOUBLES TOURNAMENT
AUSTRALIANS REACH FINAL
(Received August 26, 12.30 p.m.) BOSTON, August 25. The American national lawn tennis doubles tournament was continued today. Two Australian pairs reached the semi-finals of the men's doubles, Quist and Bromwich going into the final by default. Results are:— Men's Doubles.—Quist and Bromwich beat Molloy and Toley, 6-1, 9-7, 6-2; Hopman and Schwartz beat Petra and Destremau, 6-0, 9-7, 8-6. Hopman and Schwartz have defaulted to Quist and Bromwich,, whom they were drawn to play in the semi-finals. Women's Doubles. —Semi-flnal: Miss Marble and Mrs. Fabyan beat Misses Stammers and Lumb, 6-2, 6-2. * Mixed Doubles.—Allison and Mrs. j Van Ryn beat Wetherell and Miss Johnson,. 6-4, 9-7; Kovacs and Miss Wolfenden beat Schwartz and Miss D. Stevenson, 1-6, 6-4, 8-6; Riggs and Mrs. Fabyan beat Robertson and Miss Wightman, 6-1, 6-1; Quist and Miss Wynne beat York and Miss Morrill,, 6-0, 6-1; Bromwich and Miss Coyne beat Ballagh and Miss Osborne, 5-7, 6-4, 10-8; Budge and Miss Marble beat Kukuljevic and Mile. Jedrezjowska, 6-2, 8-10, 6-2; Hopman and Mrs. Hopman beat Shayes and Miss Stanton, 6-1,! 6-0. In a quarter-final Quist and Miss Wynne beat Riggs and Mrs. Fabyan, 9-7, 6-2. The Australian Associated Press agency reports that the manager of the Australian team , H. Hopman, ad-j vised the Australian Lawn Tennis | Association by cable that he and Bromwich intended to default. He then informed the tournament officials of his decision, and they protested bitterly, insisting that tickets had already been sold and that it was unsportsmanlike to disappoint the' spectators. The officials are at present attempting to persuade Hopman to change his deci-j sion and put on merely an exhibition game with the spectators not knpwing that it is not a competitive affair.
