"UP AGAINST IT"
THE MINING INDUSTRY
(By Telegraph.) (Special to the "Evening Post.")
DUNEDIN, This Day,
"The mining industry is up against it in every way today," said a speaker at the annual meeting of the Nevis Sluicing Claims Limited. "The Government will not assist it, the Mines Department is not very sympathetic, while rising wages have proved a problem."
In four years wages had shown an increase of 25 per cent., while it was almost an impossibility to obtain experienced men. Four years ago one could obtain very good men at 14s a day, but now all one could obtain was some useless men at 18s a day.
At the same meeting the chairman of directors said that the gold export tax was very heavy and a hard burden to bear, especially for small producers. The matter had been introduced at the company's last annual meeting, when it was decided to approach the Minister of Mines (the Hon. P. C. Webb) for some form of relief. The Minister had replied that he was not prepared to allow a reduction of this duty in the case of individual companies for obvious reasons.'
