COMPENSATE SHAPING UP

(Special to the "Evening Post.")

DUNEDIN, August 25. The Wingatui track has freshened up a good deal of late, and there is every reason to anticipate good going for the Otago Hunt Club's Meeting on Saturday. During the past week there have been a number of fast gallops executed, due principally to the fact that the course is a trifle bare.

There is no fitter horse on the track than Valantua, and this gelding promises to start at a short price in the Tally Ho Handicap. He was responsible for a brilliant effort over five furlongs earlier in the week, compassing the distance in lmin 3 l-ssec, and a repetition of that sprint would find the opposition scratching on Saturday.

Although he has not raced for some time Compensate has been shaping attractively in his recent trials, and he is more forward than his condition would suggest. He is engaged in the President's Handicap on Saturday, and his early brilliancy will see him in the picture for a long way. Adina is gradually fining down, and he has been infusing plenty of dash into his work of late. He is still carrying a little surplus condition but is forward enough to run out a smart five furlongs, a distance over which he will compete this week.

Not a great deal has been asked of Janet Gaynor and Roseman of late, but both are thriving and bear a particularly bright appearance. They are in useful order to open their new season's campaign on Saturday.
