FAST, CLEAN FOOTBALL

Fast, clean Rugby was seen on the Huit Recreation Ground yesterday afternoon in the final of the Rugby tournament among the representatives of primary schools in the Hutt Valley, Horowhenua, Rangitikei, and Taranaki districts. Rangitikei defeated Horowhenua in a match characterised by the clever play of the Rangitikei backs. The Horowhenua forwards battled dourly, I but the result was never in doubt. . Points were gained as follows out of a possible total of six: Rangitikei 5, Taranaki 4, Horowhenua 2, Hutt 1. Early in the game between Rangitikei and Horowhenua a Horowhenua player made a weak kick from behind the line, and the ball bounced the right way for Rose to score a gift try, which opened Rangitikei's account. The Horowhenua forwards pressed strongly, and a penalty kick just missed the posts, but the next time Rangitikei were on attack Hollo way made a strong run and scored. O'Hanlon converted. Horowhenua tried hard, but the Rangitikei tackling was sound. At half-time the score was: Rangitikei 8, Horowhenua 0. Rangitikei commenced the second spell by attacking. Horowhenua worked downfield, but Glennie put Rangitikei further ahead when he intercepted a passing rush and ran sixty yards to' score. O'Hanlon converted with a good kick. Rangitikei kept up the pressure, and the ball travelled through the backs to the wing three-quarter, who was brought down. Shortly afterwards a bunch of players went over the line j and the referee ordered a kick from 1 the twenty-five yards line. Neylon made a strong dash for Horowhenua, but was brought down by O'Hanlon. Holloway (Rangitikei) made a fine run, but was tackled just on the line. Haitana ran . through half the opposing team and put Rangitikei still further ahead. Horowhenua's first points were gained when Harris kicked a beautiful penalty goal. Horowhenua tried hard, but were* unable to increase their total, and the final score was: Rangitikei 16, Horowhenua 3. TARANAKI V. HUTT VALLEY. Taranaki attacked from the kick-off and after Byrnes had just failed to score the backs combined beautifully for Vincent to cross the line. The Hutt forwards pressed for a time, and Hathaway evened the score with a penalty kick. The Taranaki backs were dan : gerous whenever they got going. Rangi made a brilliant dash to score. Vincent dribbled through, picked up the ball, and outpaced the field, and scored. Hutt converted. Taranaki's next try came when Hancock cut through and got a try beside the posts. Hunt converted, making the score at half-time: Taranaki 16, Hutt 3. Hutt used the line effectively, in the second spell, and went on to the attack. From a blind-side movement, senior scored for Hutt, and a pretty movement on the part of the Taranaki backs ended in Rangi scoring a try which Hunt converted. Hutt were still trying and from loose play Garrett picked up and scored beside the posts. Hathaway converted, making the score 21-11. Hutt again attacked until Byrnes (Taranaki) picked up the, ball at half-way, and raced away, and scored between the posts. Hunt converted. The Taranaki backs were the winning factor in the game, but the Hutt forwards played meritoriously. The final score was: ■- Taranaki 26, Hutt 11.
