ITALIAN'S INVENTION
NEW POWER TRANSMITTER
(Received August 23, 1.20 p.m.)
LONDON, August 22.
A power transmitter Which combines the functions of both clutch and gear-box was described by Mr. F. C Lea, consulting engineer, at the Science Congress, in reading a paper descriptive of an invention by Pietro Salerni, an Italian in London, who declares that he will not give a monopoly to any country. The principle of the invention is also applicable to steam turbines!
The invention replaces the gear-box by a centrifugal pump driven by the engine and pumping oil to a turbine containing reaction elements. The turbine conveys the power so developed to the driving shaft. Everything is regulated from the accelerator, and the only other gadget is the reverse lever.
Scientists tested a car which. Lea stated had undergone tests over 65,000 miles, does 21 miles to the gallon of fuel, and starts readily. With a full load on a 1 in 4 grade there is surprising acceleration. •
