WEATHER STILL GOOD.

MILDER TEMPERATURES

Special forecast for Wellington:— Light to moderate north-easterly to northerly winds predominating. •Weather fair to fine and milder.

The. general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for moderate but increasing easterly winds in the far north. Westerlies will prevail in the southern portion of the South Island, and elsewhere winds will be light to moderate and variable. Over most of the Auckland Province the weather will be cloudy to overcast. There will be rain at times" in the extreme north, and the rain will gradually extend southwards. There will be occasional showers also in southern coastal areas. Otherwise the weather will still be fair to fine. Some frosts are still probable tonight, but temperatures generally will be milder.

The meteorological -situation continues, to be exceptionally quiet. Eastern Australia, the Tasman Sea, and New Zealand are covered by a particularly large and intense anticyclone, the centre of which has moved from yesterday's position in the middle of the Tasman Sea, west of the South Island, to the north-east corner of the North Island. This morning, however, there were vindications of a cyclonic disturbance developing to the northwest of Norfolk Island. This cyclone, in all 'probability, will move towards the North Island, and in fact it has already begun to affect the weather in the Auckland Peninsula. During the last twenty-four hours winds have remained light and variable, easterlies predominating in the far north and westerlies in the far south. Except for reports of a few light showers about Foveaux Strait and a little drizzle at Cape Maria Van Diemen, the weather has continued fair to fine, and in most places - beautifully so. This morning, however, cloud had increased somewhat over the northern half of the North Island. It was again cold last night, with many frosts, especially in the South Island, these being followed this morning in a number of places by fog. Auckland's weather yesterday was fair to fine, with light and variable winds, these conditions continuing throughout the night. Temperatures during the day were mild, but the night was cold, the maximum and minimum temperatures being 59.6 and 38.8 degrees respectively. Wellington had fine and sunny weather, with a light northerly breeze. Bright sunshine totalled 9.7 hours, 4.7 hours in the morning and 5 hours in the afternoon. The maximum temperature was 57.9 degrees, the highest since June 20 last, and the minimum was 41.2 degrees. A light northerly wind was blowing this morning and there was slightly more cloud. Christchurch had cloudless but hazy weather, a light north-sasterly wind becoming stronger during the afternoon. Temperatures were cool, the maximum being 54.8 degrees. The night was cold with a very-hard frost of 14.9 degrees, the minimum temperature being 27.6 degrees, with a grass minimum of 17.1 degrees. Clear skies ruled throughout the night, .and at 9 a.m today there was some broken fog.

Dunedin also shared in the general fine weather yesterday, having only a ■few passing clouds and practically no winds. The weather this morning was still calm and clear.
