When the River Nile is falling it is often impossible for passengers and mail to reach their destinations by means of the river steamers, and ivhen this happens shallow-draught' barges are requisitioned, and these are pulled the last few miles of the journey by Dinka tribesmen, of whom some hundreds are called on for the purpose.
