ZOO CAGES SMASHED
WILD ANIMALS FREE
EXCITEMENT IN BARCELONA
BARCELONA, August 20,
Bombs dropped during an air raid today smashed cages in the zoo, liberating lions, tigers, and panthers. A free fight ensued and the keepers were compelled to shoot the animals. Bombs killed many monkeys and others escaped in the direction of the city.
The Government has tightened up military control of ports and war industries, and all working in either of these come under direct military rule.
Military operations are moving slowly. Bitter fighting continues on the Ebro front. A message from Salamanca says that Franco claims a victory which endangers the Government positions on the east of Ebro.
