SINGLES FINAL TO BUDGE

NEW YORK, August 20. The finals of the tennis championships at Newport resulted:—

Men's Singles.—J. D. Budge beat S B. Wood, 6-3, 6-3, 6-2.

Men's Doubles.—J. D. Budge and C. G. Mako beat W. Allison and J. Van Ryn, 7-5, 7-5, 6-2.

Budge was not extended and gave only flashes of his best form. He said that he does not feel fit. He is concerned owing to the proximity of the Davis Cup games against Australia.

The finals of the women's championship tournament played at Manchester (Mass.) resulted:—

Singles.—Miss A. Marble (U.S.A.) beat Miss C. Wynne (Australia), 6-1, 6-3.

Doubles. —Miss A. Marble and Mrs. S. Fabyan (U.S.A.) beat Miss C. Wynne and Miss D. Stevenson (Australia), 1-6, 6-3, 6-2. Miss Wynne hit the ball as hard as ever, but her drives went wild.

In the women's national doubles draw, four foreign and four American teams are seeded. Miss Wynne and Miss Coyne (Australia) *and Miss Marble and Mrs. Fabyan (U.S.A.) are first in their respective divisions. These two teams incidentally drew the first-round byes.
