GOLF CLUB BALL

MANOR PARK SIGN

Some three hundred guests attended the first annual dance of the Manor Park Golf Club at the Mayfair Cabaret on Saturday night, which "proved most j successful. The decorations followed the club landmarks, including the "Manor Park" sign, and also the "port hole" sign, which was placed above the alcove for sitting out and was regarded with more favour than is usual with the original one at the links. The guests were received by the club president, Mr. A. S. T. Butler, and Mrs. Butler, who, with Mr. and Mrs. B. Brickman, were hosts and hostesses. Members presented the recently-retired secretary, Mr. J. L. Barnard, with a handsome wrist watch and canteen of cutlery in appreciation of his services during the long period of his term of office. Pleasant interludes provided were an appropriate golf ballet by pupils of Miss Marjorie Vause, and a clever song and dance specialty number by little Sheila Levy. Excellent "swing" music was supplied by the orchestra for dancing, and a savoury supper was served. Pre-ball cocktail parties were given by Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barnard, Miss D. Fairbrother, and Miss K. Kerr, followed by a dinner at the Hotel St. George. The official party consisted of Mr. and Mrs. A. S. T. Butler, Mr. and Mrs. Brickman, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barnard, Mr. and Mrs. A. Radford, Mr. and Mrs. J. Barker, Misses K. Kerr, D. Fairbrother, and D. Nash, and Messrs. C. Allan, G. Wilson, J. Hennessy, S. Livingston, and A. Rodgers.

At the August meeting of the St. James's Mothers' Union, Lower Hutt, Mrs. M. Nichol (secretary) presided. Mrs. J. O. Taylor, for ten years literature secretary, gave a talk on literature for mothers published at the Mary Sumner House, embracing all aspects of bringing up children. Numerous books and pamphlets were mentioned, and four described were "Wave of Prayer," "Modern Challenge," "Suggestions for Prayer for Little Children," and "Approach to Marriage," the latter primarily for engaged couples. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded to Mrs. Taylor, and two vocal solos com tributed by Mrs. Greagor were warmly applauded. Supper was served.
