NAVAL HOSTS
VOLUNTEER RESERVE DANCE
Landsmen who attended the dance given by the officers and ship's company at the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Hinemoa Street, on Saturday night were almost literally at sea. The training depot, though conventional in architecture from the outside, was extremely different within. Guests, instead of walking up the stairs, mounted a companionway; they were ushered into the "bays," danced on the deck; and sat out in the "foc's'l." A picture of Admiral Nelson framed with laurels, and a striped silk canopy of royal blue and gold (R.N.V.R. colours), completely hid the roof and maintain-' ed the illusion of being "aboard." A 4in gun was also in evidence.
Nautical dances, military two-steps, and a Monte Carlo were popular items on the programme, and with a particularly enthusiastic orchestra the large number of dancers (of whom the majority were in uniform) thoroughly enjoyed themselves. An excellent supper was served.
The co-guests were received by Commander Taylor (officer commanding the Division) and Mrs. Taylor, and those in his party were Commodore H. E. Horan, R.N., and Mrs. Horan, Captain R. D.
