WELLINGTON-AUCKLAND TRIP

Wishing to make a personal investigation of the shunting derailment at Auckland, Mr. G. H. Mackley, General Manager of Railways, accompanied by the heads of the engineering, locomotive, and transport departments of the service, made a fast trip to the spot yesterday in the running time of 8 hours 56 minutes. His private rail-car was used. Starting at 4.20 a.m., the destination was reached at 2.20 p.m. Stops for meals and fuelling accounted for 1 hour 4 minutes. Mr. Mackley returned to Wellington this morning by the Limited express.

The small private car did the journey all the way in top gear, except when stopping and starting. Mr. Mackley wishes to emphasise that no attempt was made to create any records but he is sure that the trip could be made by the new rail-car Aotea in 8 hours 30 minutes, if all conditions were favourable. He points out that he could not have been on the spot "in Auckland in the time, taking the schedules of other forms of transport into consideration, and the fact that transport to the spot from an aerodrome would have been necessary. His private car was in the circumstances the most speedy and economical means of conveyance, considering that he was accompanied by his officers
