LONDON REACTIONS
LOOKING TO AMERICA
(Received August 20, 11.30 a.m.)
LONDON, August 19,
In spite of the disquieting international situation, the stock and share markets are paying most of their attention to Anterica,
The trend of home trade has been reluctantly down ard, but there is little serious selling pressure. Business is reduced to an exiguous proportion without greatly depressing prices.
Authorities in the City take an adverse view of the future of gilt-edged securities, of which occasional purchases are made under the influence of a supposed improvement in the European situation, but these have not been sufficient to support present prices.
The heavy recent decline in industrial activities has resulted in industrial production being brought down to the level of early in 1936.
The demand for gold, though the price is far from the panic levels of last week, remains abnormal. Hoarding appears to be declining. The French authorities have launched their vigorous campaign against franc speculators so successfully that discounts for all periods have fallen rapidly.
