FIRST OF 1938 PROGRAMME
THREE OF DIDO CLASS

Subject to the settlement of certain points, the Admiralty has decided to entrust the construction of one of the Dido class criusers of the 1938 programme to each of the following firms:—Cammell, Laird and Co., Birkenhead; R. and W. Hawthorn, Leslie and Co., Hebburn, Newcastle-on-Tyne; and Scotts' Shipbuilding and Engineering Company, Greenock. | These orders are the first units of ' the 1938 programme to be ordered apart from motor torpedo boats. These will complete the second squadron of five Dido ships, as seven are already building under the previous programmes. They are of 5450 tons and each will cost about £1,250,000. There are now 19 cruisers of all classes building or ordered, and four more have been authorised. The latter will be vessels of 8000 tons. Other contracts outstanding under the 1938 programme include two battleships of not more than 40,000 tons, one large aircraft-carrier, three submarines, a Fleet air arm supply and repair ship, and various auxiliaries.
