P.W.D. BIRTHDAY BALL
Unique decorations were to the fore, at the twenty-first birthday ball held by the Public Works Department in St. Francis Hall last evening. In prominent places round the hall were life-size posters depicting every phase of P.W.D. activity — architecture, mechanics, electrical engineering, and aerodrome planning, and others. These culminated in a centrepiece of black and silver irt which the "21st" motif was prominent. Streamers in these predominating tones combined With the "21st" ' motif effectively throughout the hall. The "high light" of the evening was a novelty danee —"the P.W.D. special." The winner of this dance was presented with a knife, to cut the giant birthday cake on which "iced" wheelbarrows sat democratically side by side with modern "iced", tractors. An excellent punch bowl was well patronised by most dancers. The chairman
of the committee, Mr. Stratford, was presented with an illuminated gold twenty-first birthday key. The committee comprised Mr. Stratford (chairman), Messrs. Highet (cosecretary) , Corrigan, Connolly, McMullah, Anstiss, Glenn, and Easton, and Messrs. Mathers and Vine (ex officio). Misses McGovern (co-secretary), Dallard,. Hale, and Baggett.
