CRASH INTO SHOP
CAR THIEF IN HURRY
EVENTUALLY ESCAPES
(By Telegraph—Press Association.)
ROTORUA, This Day.
Apparently placing the car into low instead of reverse gear in his hurry to get away, a car thief caused a sensation in one of the main streets of Rotorua last, night when he drove the car across a footpath, smashing a plate glass window in a stationer's shop, before travelling away at great speed to elude the efforts of Constable Quirke to stop him.
The car had been parked outside a restaurant by the owner, who left the engine running. The noise of the crash attracted a large crowd. In his efforts to stop the thief Constable Quirke was nearly struck by the fast-moving car. A search was immediately instituted, but so far neither the car nor the thief has been traced.
Considerable damage was caused to the shop premises, stock flying in all directions.
