RANFURLY SHIELD
FIRST MATCH OF SEASON
(By Telegraph—Press Association.}
INVERCARGILL, This Day,
The first challenge match of the season for the Ranfurly Shield is being jftayed this afternoon between Otago and Southland. The match aroused widespread interest. A large contingent of Otago supporters arrived last night, and there were further special trains this morning. Visitors were also present from Wellington, Christchurch, and other centres.
Both sides were confident before the match. The ground was heavy after the snowfall on Thursday night and a frost last night.
Simon was unable to play for Otago, being replaced by W. Campbell, while Miles replaced Mahoney in the Southland three-quarter line. It was estimated that the crowd would exceed 15,000. The weather this morning was fine but cold, with a fairly clear sky,, and rain was not expected to mar the fixture.
