DAY IN PARLIAMENT
MORE ABOUT THE BUDGET
The whole of yesterday's sitting of the Hpuse of Representatives was devoted to the Financial Debate, five members participating. The argument generally followed familiar and fairly well-defined lines, and the sedate pace set by previous speakers was well maintained. There ,were two Opposition speakers, Mr. W. A. Bodkin (National* Central Otago) and Mr. S. G. Holland (National, Christchurch North). Mr. Bodkin devoted part of his speech to a vigorous reply to certain statements made by the Minister of Public Works (the Hon. R. Semple) the previous evening, and. the Minister had another word or two to say about the same subject by way of explanation. Apart from that, everything went along nice and evenly. Mr. Holland made a rather statistical speech about unemployment, London balances, and taxation, particularly taxation, whfch makes any Opposition member talk.
The debate will probably run the whole of next week, during most of which period the Prime Minister will be away in the South Island. ,
