BILLIARDS
PEEK WELLINGTON
CHAMPION
C E. Peek scored a decisive win from S. Moses (New Zealand champion) in the final of the Wellington amateur billiards championship last night, the final score being 500-274.
Play was interesting, though onesided, throughout, Peek's consistency he averaged 10 per visit I—holding1 —holding the full attention of the large crowd. Though Peek's highest break was 41, he accumulated several others, the best of which were 21, 31, 25, 22, 25, 28, 22, 30, 21, 28. Moses's best were 2Q, 37 28, 27. Moses has won the NewZealand title for the last two years and was the 1937 Wellington champion. He was palpably off form last night, however, and luck was also against him. Peek settled very early and with breaks of 21 and 30, quickly followed by others, he compiled a century lead that he extended further. Moses from the beginning had a singularly poor run.
At the conclusion the customary presentations were made by Mr. F. Vpsseler, president of the Ifew Zealand Billiards Association. Peek, as winner, received the shield, and also,, a gold medal. Moses, runnei>up, received the crystalate balls used in the games, and though his earlier break of 112 unfinished was the highest of the series, it is a condition that this trophy be awarded outside the finalists. Mr. A. Armstrong, with a nice effort of 63, received this award. Mr. A. Cohen, chairman of the Wellington Billiards Association, said that an unbroken run of 35 years was being severed, as Billiards Limited s building was due for demolition and rebuilding shortly. The next amateur championship would be played in a new venue, and the open champion-; ship would be the last to be staged there. Entries close on Wednesday next and the tfames start Moaday., August 8c i
